MS Exchange Server primarily works with MS Outlook. Entire mailbox data of MS Outlook is stored on Exchange Server in EDB files. At times, EDB files get corrupted due to various reasons. Corrupt EDB files become inaccessible. So is the data stored in them. EDB file corruption stops working of MS Outlook.

Microsoft provides free Exchange Server Repair Tool (Scanedb.exe) to repair corrupt Exchange Database files (EDB). However, it’s a low level utility which is capable of fixing only minor EDB corruption problems. It fails to repair corrupt EDB files during severe corruption issues. Subsequently, you can add that Scanedb.exe is not an ideal EDB repair solution and thus might fail after displaying certain symptoms.

Here is an instance that displays similar failure situation. Suppose, you experience some abrupt behavior of MS Exchange Server and you find out that the EDB file you are using has gone corrupt. While trying to access the file, MS Exchange Server shows that the file is not a valid EDB file. So, to view the file, you have to repair it with Scanedb.exe utility.

Using Scanedb.exe tool for repairing a corrupt EDB file, you specify the name and path of the corrupt file (when prompted). Now, when you click the “Repair” button, the Exchange Server Recovery software freezes and stops working. If you check the Windows Task Manager to know the status of repair, you find that the application is not responding. The behavior is repeated every time you attempt to repair the corrupt EDB file and the EDB file remains in the same state of corruption. The most probable causes for the situation can be:

  • Scanedb.exe file is not installed properly
  • EDB file has surpassed 2GB size limitation
  • EDB file is severely corrupt

In certain cases, Exchange Recovery Software might take more than required time if you select a large EDB file for repairing. Wait for some time; but if the state seems unchanged, then check out the possible solutions for fixing the issue:

  1. Reinstall MS Exchange Server or try to repair the EDB file on a different computer to make sure that the issue is not with your computer system.
  2. Reduce the size of EDB file with data filtering option of the tool.
  3. Switch to a professional EDB Viewer or Exchange Server Recovery Software.
